‘Maharashtra Stands With Development’: PM Modi Hails Mahayuti’s Big Win in Local Body Polls; BJP Loses Gadchiroli Ward by One Vote

Maharashtra Local Body Election Results 2025: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed strong satisfaction over the resounding victory of the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in the Maharashtra local body elections, calling it a clear endorsement of people-centric development politics. Thanking the voters of Maharashtra, PM Modi said the results show that the state is firmly standing with the agenda of development and good governance.

As per trends and final results available till Sunday evening (December 21), the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has registered its best-ever performance in local body elections in the state, winning 129 municipal councils, which accounts for nearly 45 percent of the total councils. This marks a significant jump compared to 94 councils won in 2017, highlighting the party’s growing grassroots presence.

Mahayuti Dominates Across Maharashtra

The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance—which includes key allies—delivered an even stronger performance at the alliance level. Out of 288 municipal councils, Mahayuti secured control over 218 councils, covering nearly 75 percent of the total area. The scale of this victory has been described by political observers as a decisive mandate in favour of the ruling coalition.

Reacting to the outcome, PM Modi posted on social media platform X, saying, “Maharashtra stands firmly with development. I thank the people of the state for blessing BJP and Mahayuti in municipal council and municipal panchayat elections.” He added that the verdict reflects people’s trust in the government’s development-focused approach.

PM Modi Reaffirms Commitment to Governance

The Prime Minister further said that the massive win reinforces confidence in the vision of inclusive and citizen-focused development. He assured that the government would work with renewed energy to fulfil the aspirations of every citizen across Maharashtra.

According to PM Modi, the election outcome is not just a political victory but also a validation of governance based on infrastructure development, welfare schemes, and transparent administration. His remarks underline BJP’s strategy of taking national development narratives down to the local governance level.

CM Devendra Fadnavis Credits Development Agenda

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also reacted to the results, calling the Mahayuti’s success the outcome of collective efforts by the BJP organisation and the state government. He expressed confidence that the alliance would perform even better in the upcoming municipal corporation elections.

Fadnavis said the elections were fought purely on the development agenda, without targeting political opponents. He emphasised that his campaign focused on the work done so far and future development plans rather than negative politics.

“This is the result of a positive campaign. For the first time, I asked for completely positive votes, and people responded with completely positive support,” the Chief Minister said.

BJP Emerges as the Largest Party

Highlighting the numbers, Fadnavis stated that BJP has once again emerged as the single largest party in the local body elections. According to him, 48 percent of the elected members won on the BJP symbol. He also pointed out that 129 BJP candidates have been elected as municipal council presidents, while Mahayuti candidates secured the president’s post in nearly 75 percent of local bodies.

In another major milestone, around 3,300 BJP councillors have been elected across Maharashtra, making it a record-breaking performance for the party. Fadnavis attributed this success to the development-oriented governance under PM Modi, which he said has created a positive political environment across the country.

Next Focus on Municipal Corporation Elections

With the local body polls concluded, attention now shifts to the municipal corporation elections, including the high-profile Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Elections for 29 municipal corporations in Maharashtra are scheduled to be held on January 15, with vote counting planned for the following day. These elections are expected to be another major political test for all parties.

Gadchiroli Shock: BJP Loses by Just One Vote

Despite the overall dominance, the BJP faced a rare setback in Gadchiroli, where a dramatic contest caught political attention. In Ward No. 4 of the Gadchiroli Municipal Council, a Congress candidate defeated the BJP nominee by just one vote, showcasing how tight local contests can be.

Congress candidate Shrikant Deshmukh edged past BJP’s Sanjay Mandavgade in a nail-biting finish. According to election officials, Deshmukh secured 717 votes, while Mandavgade received 716 votes. Following the announcement, the BJP candidate sought a recount, but election authorities rejected the request after verifying all protocols.

Despite this narrow loss, BJP retained its overall dominance in Gadchiroli and continued to hold the municipal council president’s post, remaining the largest party in the council.

Big Picture

The Maharashtra local body election results underline BJP and Mahayuti’s strong organisational reach and voter connect at the grassroots level. While the one-vote defeat in Gadchiroli highlights the unpredictability of local politics, the overall verdict clearly signals public support for the ruling alliance’s development-driven narrative.
