The final phase of local body elections in Maharashtra is underway, with voting being held today, December 20, for presidents and members of 23 municipal councils and nagar panchayats, along with elections to fill 143 vacant member posts. The results of these elections will be declared on Sunday, December 21.

Polling is witnessing enthusiastic participation across several regions, with long queues seen outside polling booths since morning. Notably, a large number of women voters have turned out to exercise their franchise. The Maharashtra State Election Commission (SEC) has put in place extensive arrangements to ensure smooth and peaceful polling as well as vote counting.

Earlier, voting for 263 municipal councils and town panchayats across the state was completed on December 2. However, elections in the remaining 23 local bodies were postponed to December 20 due to court cases and administrative hurdles. With today’s polling, the entire local body election process in the state has now reached its concluding stage.

Where Voting Is Taking Place

Voting is being conducted today in municipal councils and nagar panchayats including Ambernath, Baramati, Fursungi–Uruli Devachi, Kopargaon, Devlali Pravara, Pathardi, Nevasa, Mangalwedha, Mahabaleshwar, Phaltan, Fulambri, Mukhed, Dharmabad, Nilanga, Renapur, Vasmat, Ananjangaon Surji, Balapur, Yavatmal, Washim, Deulgavraja, Devali and Ghugghus. In Anagar municipal council, elections were held unopposed.

These elections are considered politically significant as they reflect grassroots sentiment and set the tone for future state-level contests.

Results to Be Declared Tomorrow

The State Election Commission had announced the schedule for general elections to 288 municipal councils and nagar panchayats on November 4, 2025. As per the schedule, polling for most local bodies was completed earlier this month, while voting in the remaining constituencies is being held today.

According to the SEC, counting of votes for all the constituencies where polling is taking place on December 20 will begin at 10 am on December 21 at designated counting centres.

Strict Instructions for Peaceful Polling

Maharashtra State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare has directed district administrations and police authorities to maintain strict vigilance to ensure peaceful voting and counting. Over the past two days, Waghmare reviewed election preparedness through video conferencing with district collectors, police commissioners, superintendents of police and other election officials.

The SEC has clearly instructed that any untoward incident during polling or counting will be dealt with swiftly and firmly. Adequate police deployment and preventive measures have been put in place to maintain law and order.
