If you have a domestic LPG connection, there is an important government update you should know about before October begins. From October 1, 2026, consumers will need to have completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication to book subsidised domestic LPG refills at the regulated retail selling price.

The government has clarified that consumers who have already completed the authentication process do not need to do it again. As of September 19, around 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers, or 89.9% of the total, had already completed the process.

What changes from October 1?

The key change is that eligible consumers who have not completed Biometric Aadhaar Authentication will need to complete it before they can book subsidised refills at the applicable regulated price.

The objective is to ensure that LPG subsidies reach genuine beneficiaries and to prevent duplicate or ineligible connections from receiving subsidised cylinders.

How can you complete Aadhaar authentication?

Consumers have multiple options, so there is no need to visit a government office specifically for this process.

You can complete the authentication:

• At the time of LPG cylinder delivery, with the delivery person using the oil marketing company's mobile application.

• By visiting your LPG distributor's showroom.

• Through the official mobile app of your LPG provider.

For example, Indane customers can use IndianOil ONE, Bharatgas customers can use HelloBPCL, while HP Gas customers can use HP PAY.

What if you don't want to complete biometric authentication?

The government has also provided an option for consumers who are unwilling or unable to complete the process.

Such consumers can register their choice through their oil marketing company's digital channels, including the website, mobile application, WhatsApp chatbot or IVRS. However, LPG will then be supplied at the applicable market price without subsidy, subject to local availability.

Already completed it? You don't need to worry

If your Biometric Aadhaar Authentication has already been completed, there is no additional action required from your side.

Your LPG refill booking will continue as before, subject to the applicable subsidy rules.

Why is the government doing this?

The government says Aadhaar-based authentication will help link each LPG connection with an authenticated consumer. This is intended to reduce duplicate and ineligible connections, prevent diversion of subsidised domestic cylinders for commercial use and make subsidy delivery more targeted.

Don't wait until the last day

If you are unsure whether your LPG connection has completed Aadhaar authentication, it is better to check with your LPG provider before October 1.

The government has already carried out a large nationwide authentication drive, including SMS and WhatsApp outreach, distributor follow-ups and special camps. Consumers can also seek assistance through the LPG helpline at 1800-2333-555.

For millions of LPG consumers, checking this one requirement before the deadline could help avoid confusion when booking their next cylinder.
