LPG Cylinder Rules Changed From October 1: Aadhaar Authentication Now Mandatory for Subsidised Refills

If you receive a subsidy on your domestic LPG cylinder, there is an important rule you should know about. The government has made biometric Aadhaar authentication mandatory for subsidised domestic LPG refills from October 1, 2026.
The move is aimed at ensuring that subsidised LPG benefits reach eligible beneficiaries and that duplicate or ineligible connections can be identified.
What has changed?
Under the new requirement, consumers receiving subsidised domestic LPG benefits need to complete Aadhaar-based biometric authentication.
This means that simply having an LPG connection may not be enough to continue receiving the subsidy. Eligible consumers must ensure that their Aadhaar authentication is completed according to the process prescribed by their LPG distributor.
Who needs to pay attention?
The rule is particularly important for households that receive subsidised domestic LPG refills.
Consumers who are unsure whether their LPG connection is linked correctly should contact their respective LPG distributor or check the official service channels of their LPG provider.
It is better to complete the required authentication before ordering the next subsidised refill rather than waiting until there is a problem with the benefit.
Why has the government introduced this requirement?
Government subsidy programmes involve large public expenditure. Aadhaar-based authentication can help establish that benefits are being received by the intended beneficiary.
The requirement is also part of the government's broader effort to improve transparency and reduce the possibility of duplicate or incorrect beneficiary records.
What should LPG consumers do?
If you receive an LPG subsidy, keep the following details ready:
-
Aadhaar details
-
Registered mobile number
-
LPG consumer number
-
Bank account details linked for subsidy, where applicable
Consumers should approach their authorised LPG distributor for the biometric authentication process if it has not already been completed.
Be careful of fraud
Whenever a new government rule involving Aadhaar or LPG is introduced, scammers may try to take advantage of consumers.
Never share your Aadhaar OTP, bank OTP, UPI PIN, ATM PIN or internet-banking password with anyone over the phone.
If someone claims that your LPG connection will immediately be cancelled unless you share an OTP or transfer money to a personal account, verify the request directly with your authorised LPG distributor.
What if you don't receive an LPG subsidy?
The new requirement specifically concerns subsidised domestic LPG refills. Therefore, consumers should first determine whether they are actually receiving a subsidy before assuming that the rule applies to them.
The safest approach is to verify the status of your LPG connection and subsidy through your distributor or the official service channels of your LPG provider.
Why this update matters
For families that depend on subsidised LPG, completing Aadhaar authentication can help prevent interruptions in their benefits.
With the requirement now applicable from October 1, 2026, consumers who have not completed the required authentication should check their status rather than waiting until their next refill.
Important: Aadhaar authentication procedures and subsidy eligibility can vary according to the applicable government rules. Consumers should rely on official LPG distributor and government channels for the latest information and never share confidential OTPs or banking credentials with unauthorised persons.
