If you receive a domestic LPG cylinder at the subsidised retail price, there is an important deadline you should know about. The government has announced that biometric Aadhaar authentication will be required from October 1, 2026, for booking subsidised domestic LPG refills.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry said the measure is intended to ensure that the subsidy reaches genuine consumers and to prevent duplicate or ineligible LPG connections.

What changes from October 1?

From October 1, consumers who want to book a domestic LPG refill at the regulated retail selling price with the applicable subsidy will need to have completed biometric Aadhaar authentication.

Consumers who have already completed the authentication do not need to repeat the process. Their LPG refills will continue as usual.

Nearly 90% consumers have already completed authentication

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, 27.43 crore active domestic LPG consumers had completed biometric Aadhaar authentication as of September 19, 2026.

This represents around 89.9% of active domestic LPG consumers.

The government had previously extended the deadline several times to give consumers additional time to complete the process.

How can you complete Aadhaar authentication?

Consumers have several options to complete the process.

The authentication can be completed during LPG cylinder delivery, where the delivery person can use the authorised oil marketing company's mobile application.

Consumers can also visit their LPG distributor's showroom and complete the process there.

There is also an option to complete the process through the official mobile applications of the respective LPG companies:

• Indane customers: IndianOil ONE

• Bharatgas customers: HelloBPCL

• HP Gas customers: HP PAY

The government has also made self e-KYC facilities available through the relevant LPG digital platforms.

What if you do not complete biometric authentication?

Not completing biometric authentication does not mean that a genuine consumer will be completely unable to obtain LPG.

According to the government, consumers who do not wish to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication can register their choice through their oil marketing company's digital channels, including the website, mobile application, WhatsApp chatbot or IVRS.

However, such consumers will receive LPG at the applicable market price without subsidy. The government says 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders may be supplied, subject to local availability.

Why is the government introducing this requirement?

Domestic LPG is sold below its underlying cost, with the government providing support to keep cooking fuel affordable.

The biometric authentication process is intended to ensure that the subsidy is directed towards genuine and eligible households.

The government has also said that the process can help identify duplicate and ineligible connections and reduce the diversion of subsidised domestic LPG for commercial or industrial use.

What should LPG consumers do now?

If you use a subsidised domestic LPG connection and have not yet completed biometric Aadhaar authentication, it is advisable to complete the process before October 1.

Before sharing Aadhaar information or making any payment, consumers should use only their LPG company's official channels or their authorised distributor.

Consumers should also check their LPG account details and confirm whether their biometric authentication has already been completed. If it has, no further action is required.

Check your status before the deadline

With October 1 approaching, LPG consumers should not wait until the last moment to complete the process.

The government has stated that the authentication facility is available through delivery personnel, distributor showrooms and official LPG mobile applications.

The key point is simple: if your biometric Aadhaar authentication is already complete, you do not need to do anything again. If it is pending and you want to continue receiving subsidised LPG, complete the authentication before October 1, 2026.
