The upcoming period drama Lahore 1947, starring Sunny Deol and produced by Aamir Khan, is once again in the spotlight—this time over reports suggesting that its title may be changed ahead of release.
Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film was officially announced in October 2023 and is scheduled to release in theatres on August 13. While Lahore 1947 has been the working title so far, the makers are now reportedly exploring alternative names.
Why the Title May Change
According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the film is inspired by the acclaimed stage play Jis Lahore Nahi Dekhya, written by Syed Asghar Wajahat. Since the story unfolds in Lahore during the time of India’s Partition, the title Lahore 1947 was initially considered fitting.
However, sources suggest that the filmmakers now feel a different title might better reflect the emotional depth and thematic sensitivity of the story. Several alternative titles are reportedly under discussion, and a final decision will be taken after consultations with all stakeholders.
About the Original Play
Jis Lahore Nahi Dekhya is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and follows a Muslim family that migrates from Lucknow to Lahore. The family is allotted a haveli vacated by a Hindu household, but an elderly Hindu woman refuses to leave her ancestral home. Over time, the unlikely cohabitation leads to a poignant bond that highlights humanity amid communal division.
Cast and Release Details
Alongside Sunny Deol, the film also stars Preity Zinta, who will be seen opposite him. Reports also suggest that Aamir Khan may make a special cameo appearance in addition to producing the film under his banner Aamir Khan Productions, though no official confirmation has been made yet.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding the title, anticipation for the film remains high, especially among Sunny Deol’s fans. Whether released as Lahore 1947 or under a new name, the film is expected to be one of the major theatrical releases around Independence Day.
