A bizarre and emotionally charged scene unfolded in Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh, when a jeweller allegedly shot a monkey dead, sparking an intense reaction from dozens of monkeys who gathered at the site, mourned their companion, and even attacked the forest department team.

The incident occurred at Subhash Bazaar near a Peepal tree beside Peepal Jewellers, owned by Abhishek Gupta. According to eyewitnesses, a monkey had shaken the board outside Gupta's shop and climbed the tree. In a sudden act of violence, the jeweller fired at the monkey with a short gun, causing it to fall and die on the spot.

Monkeys gathered and mourned the death
Moments after the monkey died, dozens of monkeys arrived at the location. Some of them sat silently beside the body, while others climbed trees and began making mournful, almost human-like sounds, shocking onlookers. Many locals, frightened by the monkeys’ agitation, fled the area.

Some monkeys were seen touching and inspecting the dead monkey, even removing the cloth used to cover its body, as if trying to revive or understand what had happened.

Forest team attacked by angry monkeys
When the Forest Department arrived to retrieve the monkey's body, they were chased away by the grieving and aggressive monkeys. It took several hours and considerable effort before the team could manage to recover the body.

According to Forest Ranger SD Pandey, the post-mortem of the monkey is underway, and legal action will be taken against the jeweller once the investigation concludes.

The incident has raised serious questions about animal cruelty and has left locals stunned by the intelligence and emotional depth displayed by the monkeys.
