The CBSE report into the suicide of 9-year-old Amaira at Jaipur's Neerja Modi School revealed serious negligence. 18 months of bullying, teacher negligence, and security lapses were cited as the cause of death. The school was asked to explain.

Jaipur. Schools are supposed to be safe spaces for children, where learning is accompanied by sensitivity and safety. But an incident at Jaipur's prestigious Neerja Modi School has shaken this trust. An innocent nine-year-old girl repeatedly asked for help, repeatedly approached her teacher, repeatedly shared her plight... but she was neither heard nor understood. As a result, the girl, left alone, battling her fear and pain, jumped to her death from the fourth floor.

The bullying continued for 18 months

The report of a two-member CBSE investigation team has made several serious revelations. For 18 months, Amaira Kumar Meena, a Class 4 student, was harassed, teased, abused, and sometimes subjected to traumatic and deeply hurtful remarks by her classmates. Family members reported that complaints were repeatedly made to the school, but no action was taken. The class teacher, Poonita Sharma, ignored the child and her parents' complaints.

What happened on the day of suicide?

According to the investigation report, on the morning of November 1st, Amyra seemed normal. She was dancing, laughing, and eating golgappas. But things changed after 11 a.m. A group of boys wrote something on the class's digital slate, which deeply upset Amyra. CCTV footage shows her feeling embarrassed, uncomfortable, and repeatedly pleading with others to remove her belongings. This was the time when she most needed the teacher's support. The report states that Amyra went to the teacher five times, pleading for help for 45 minutes, but was scolded and turned away.

The girl was devastated by the teacher's behavior

The report stated that the class teacher repeatedly used words in front of the class that even the children found shocking. Amyra felt isolated and harassed. She even refused to eat her lunch that day. The report also claimed that a dispute had occurred in the classroom between some students, involving offensive language and comments.

Tampering with forensic evidence

The investigation also revealed that the place where the girl fell and died was washed by the school management, due to which the evidence required for forensic investigation was destroyed.

Complaints of several incidents have been made in the past.

The report cited several old cases:

• In September, a boy harassed Amyra, but the teacher said she should "adjust"
• In October, the same boy publicly mocked Amyra by saying "I love you" instead of "hello."
• In May last year, a child showed him the middle finger, and his complaint remained unanswered.
• In July, a boy hit her, but the school took no action.

These incidents completely shattered Amaira's confidence.

School security also under question

CBSE observed that:

• There were no safety nets on the fourth floor.
• No employee was monitoring the CCTV footage
• Floor attendants were not present
• Even the children's I-cards were not checked properly.

All these omissions have been considered as gross negligence.

Notice to school, response sought

The CBSE has asked the school to explain within 30 days why action should not be taken against it, especially under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO Act).

The report stated that Amyra was a bright, cheerful, and active student, but prolonged mental harassment, the teacher's insensitivity, and the school's negligence took her life.
