On Friday morning, when the whole world was asleep, the situation in the Middle East changed very rapidly. The world was shaken by the sound of loud explosions in Iran's capital Tehran. Israel has confirmed that it has attacked Iran first in a 'pre-emptive strike', that is, seeing the threat. There are reports of massive explosions in Iran's Natanz and Fordo nuclear plants, while there is also a report of an explosion at Tehran's Imam Khomeini International Airport. After the attack, a state of emergency has been declared in Israel. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has warned that drone and missile attacks from Iran can happen at any time. All this is happening when just a few hours ago, former US President Donald Trump had said in a media interaction that 'a fierce conflict can happen in the Middle East very soon.'
Trump had expressed the possibility of a big war.
While talking to reporters at the White House before the attack, Trump said, 'I will not say that the attack will happen immediately, but it can happen.' According to Trump, US officials are deeply concerned that Israel's attack on Iran can happen anytime. Iran had announced on Thursday that it will further accelerate its nuclear program. This announcement was made after the resolution passed against Iran by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which said that Tehran has failed to comply with the nuclear non-proliferation agreement.
Instructions to withdraw American citizens
Trump also said that he ordered the evacuation of American citizens from West Asia because 'if suddenly missiles start falling on buildings, I don't want to be the one who doesn't warn.' He clarified that this decision was taken with a heavy heart but through this 'many lives can be saved.'
War vs. Diplomacy
Interestingly, Trump later wrote on his social media Truth Social that he is in favor of a diplomatic solution to the Iran issue. He said that 'we are very close to an agreement' and that is why he does not want Israel to attack Iran at this time. However, he also added that 'the attack can spoil this deal as well as make it.
