After the first 30 matches of the Indian Premier League 2026, the performance report cards of all 10 team captains have come into focus. Interestingly, this assessment is not based on leadership decisions but purely on individual contributions with bat and ball. So far, only four captains have delivered strong performances, while the remaining six have struggled to make an impact.
Leading the list of top performers is Shreyas Iyer, who has been exceptional for Punjab Kings. He has scored 208 runs in five innings across six matches, playing a key role in his team’s unbeaten start and dominance at the top of the points table. Alongside him, Rajat Patidar has been impressive for Royal Challengers Bengaluru, scoring 230 runs in six matches and helping his team stay in the top four. Shubman Gill has also stood out despite Gujarat Titans being lower on the table, as he has amassed 265 runs and is in contention for the Orange Cap. Meanwhile, Ishan Kishan has contributed significantly for Sunrisers Hyderabad with 213 runs in six games.
On the other hand, several captains have failed to live up to expectations with their individual performances. Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag has managed only 61 runs in six matches despite his team being in a decent position. Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya has scored just 82 runs and picked up three wickets, indicating a below-par all-round performance so far. Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has struggled with the bat, scoring only 96 runs, while Kolkata Knight Riders captain Ajinkya Rahane has managed 152 runs in seven matches without making a major impact.
Similarly, Lucknow Super Giants captain Rishabh Pant has scored 147 runs in six matches, which falls short of expectations given his reputation. Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has also had a quiet season so far, contributing just 29 runs and taking five wickets in five matches.
Overall, while a few captains have led from the front with strong individual performances, the majority are yet to find their rhythm. As the tournament progresses, these underperforming leaders will need to step up quickly if they want to guide their teams toward the playoffs.
