In a major and emotional moment for Mumbai Indians fans, star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed captain of the franchise for the first time in his IPL career. The decision came ahead of Mumbai Indians’ crucial IPL 2026 clash against Punjab Kings in Dharamsala.
Bumrah, who has been associated with Mumbai Indians since 2013, received the leadership role after regular captain Hardik Pandya and stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav became unavailable for the match.
The appointment marks a historic milestone in Bumrah’s journey with the franchise, where he transformed from a young uncapped pacer into one of the world’s leading fast bowlers and now a captain of the five-time IPL champions.
Mumbai Indians Forced Into Captaincy Change
According to reports, Hardik Pandya has been dealing with back pain and was unavailable for selection in recent matches. He also reportedly did not travel with the squad to Dharamsala.
Meanwhile, Suryakumar Yadav, who captained Mumbai Indians in the previous two games, was unavailable due to personal reasons. With both senior leaders absent, the team management handed the captaincy responsibility to Bumrah.
Although this is Bumrah’s first time leading Mumbai Indians in the IPL, he already has captaincy experience at the international level.
Bumrah’s Previous Captaincy Experience

Speaking during the toss, Bumrah expressed happiness about the opportunity and reflected on his journey with the team.
According to his remarks, he joined Mumbai Indians as a teenager at the age of 19 and never imagined he would one day captain the side. He added that he enjoys responsibility and views captaincy as a fresh challenge.
