The Bangladesh government has officially banned the telecast and broadcast of the Indian Premier League in the country. The decision comes amid growing tensions following the exclusion of Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL.
According to official statements, Bangladesh’s Sports Ministry requested the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to stop the IPL broadcast, after which the ban was implemented. The move has sparked widespread debate, given the IPL’s massive popularity among Bangladeshi cricket fans.
Why Bangladesh Banned the IPL
The ban followed strong reactions from senior figures in Bangladesh’s sports administration. Asif Nazrul, a member of the Sports Ministry, publicly urged the Information and Broadcasting Minister to block IPL telecasts. In his statement, Nazrul expressed deep dissatisfaction over what he described as unfair treatment of Mustafizur Rahman, warning that any disrespect toward Bangladesh cricket or its players would not be tolerated.
Series of Strong Steps by Bangladesh
This is not the first tough stand taken by Bangladesh in recent weeks. Earlier:
-
Bangladesh refused to tour India for the 2026 T20 World Cup
-
The Bangladesh Cricket Board sought explanations from the Board of Control for Cricket in India over Mustafizur Rahman’s IPL exclusion
-
The BCB also approached the International Cricket Council, requesting a change of venue
-
Bangladesh proposed playing its T20 World Cup matches in Sri Lanka instead of India, citing security concerns
Big Blow for Fans
The IPL has traditionally enjoyed a huge viewership in Bangladesh, with several Bangladeshi stars having played in the league over the years. The broadcast ban has therefore come as a major setback for cricket fans in the country.
