A shocking case of violence linked to an interfaith marriage has surfaced from Yamunanagar, Haryana. Just two months after their wedding, a Hindu groom was brutally assaulted in public, while his Muslim wife was allegedly abducted by a group of armed men in broad daylight. The incident has triggered panic in the area and raised serious concerns over safety and law and order.

What happened

The incident took place near Urjani village on National Highway 907. Manish, a resident of Nathanpur village, was travelling in a car along with his wife Sabana and some relatives to attend a family function in Balouli village. The couple had married for love about two months ago and were reportedly staying with relatives, as Sabana’s family was unhappy with the marriage.

According to police, three cars suddenly blocked their vehicle on the highway. Around 15–20 masked men stepped out, armed with sharp weapons, and attacked the car within seconds. The assailants smashed the vehicle, severely assaulted Manish, and forcibly dragged Sabana out of the car before fleeing the scene.

Children also attacked

A woman travelling in the car told police that two young children present in the vehicle were also attacked during the incident. The sudden and violent nature of the assault left the occupants traumatised.

Manish was left critically injured on the road. On receiving information, police teams reached the spot and rushed the injured to the hospital. A crime branch team was immediately deployed to track down the attackers.

Family anger over interfaith marriage

Preliminary investigation suggests that Sabana’s family members were unhappy with her marriage to a Hindu man. Police suspect that the attackers were linked to her family and had been waiting for an opportunity to carry out the attack.

Dial 112 in-charge Arvinder Singh stated that initial findings point toward opposition to the love marriage as the motive behind the crime. Local police and the crime branch are jointly investigating the case.

Investigation underway

Police are examining CCTV footage from nearby areas, questioning witnesses, and searching for the abducted woman and the accused. Officials have assured that strict action will be taken against those involved.
