Instagram is about to undergo a major change! The company will remove this crucial privacy feature. What will be the impact on users?

There is very important and big news for all Instagram users. The company has taken a big decision. This will affect all users of the social media platform Instagram. From May 8, there will be a big change on the platform. No chat will be private on this photo and video sharing app owned by Meta. This is the reason why the company has now decided to remove the end-to-end encryption (E2EE) feature from Instagram DM. Meta has shared information about this in its blog post.

The blog post states that the end-to-end encryption feature has been removed from Instagram's Direct Messages. The company originally added end-to-end encryption to Instagram in 2023. Meta, like WhatsApp, introduced end-to-end encryption to Instagram and Facebook Messenger. But now the company has decided to remove this feature.

Direct messages are not private.
After removing the end-to-end encryption feature, Meta will now have complete access to the person with whom the users are talking on Instagram. This means that now the privacy of the chats of the users will be removed. Due to the end-to-end encryption feature, the messages on Instagram are visible only to the sender and the receiver. Even Meta could not access these messages. But now this will not happen. Because the company is now going to remove an important feature.

You can download old chats.
Meta has said in its blog that due to this change in Instagram, if users want to keep their old chats safe and private, then they can download their personal media and chats with the help of the given instructions. To download personal chats, users will have to update their Instagram app to the latest version. After this decision of Meta, there are many questions in the minds of the users. The most important question is whether Facebook Messenger will also remove end-to-end encryption after Instagram? Currently, no official information has been given by the company regarding this matter.

Why did the company take this decision?

A few days ago, many questions were raised about MeMe's end-to-end encryption feature in the case of child abuse. Several government agencies in the US and UK had demanded the removal of end-to-end encryption to detect viral content in cases of child exploitation. Like WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger also have end-to-end encryption, so conversations on both platforms remain completely private and cannot be accessed by MeMe or any other agency. However, now that this feature has been removed from Instagram, there is no doubt that users' privacy will be affected.
