India's Car Market Roars in August! Tata and Mahindra Surge as Maruti Suzuki Retains No. 1 Spot

August 2026 turned out to be a strong month for India's passenger vehicle market, with several major carmakers reporting impressive year-on-year growth. The latest sales numbers show that demand remained healthy, with Maruti Suzuki continuing to dominate the market, while Tata Motors and Mahindra recorded some of the fastest growth.

Hyundai and Kia also posted gains, indicating that competition in India's automobile market remains intense.

Here's a look at how the country's leading carmakers performed in August.

Maruti Suzuki Remains the Market Leader

Maruti Suzuki once again topped the sales charts in August 2026.

The company reported total sales of 219,220 vehicles, including 180,078 units sold in the domestic market, 5,298 units supplied to other manufacturers and 33,844 units exported.

Maruti Suzuki also crossed the 10-lakh-unit mark in total sales during the first five months of financial year 2026-27.

Its domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 176,971 units in August, compared with 131,278 units during the same month last year.

Between April and August 2026, Maruti Suzuki sold 898,402 passenger vehicles in the domestic market, up from 662,626 units during the corresponding period last year.

Mahindra's SUVs Continue Their Winning Run

Mahindra recorded another strong month, with total sales of 107,648 vehicles in August, including exports. This represents a 42% year-on-year increase.

SUVs remained the biggest contributor to the company's growth. Mahindra's domestic SUV sales reached 59,257 units, compared with 39,399 units in August 2025—a jump of nearly 50%.

Including exports, Mahindra sold 61,167 utility vehicles during the month.

The company also maintained strong momentum during the first five months of FY 2026-27, with utility vehicle sales reaching 294,050 units, compared with 241,337 units during the same period last year.

Tata Motors Records a Massive 56% Growth

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles delivered one of the strongest performances among the major manufacturers.

The company sold 67,753 passenger vehicles across domestic and international markets in August, compared with 43,315 units in August 2025. That's a 56% increase year-on-year.

Domestic passenger vehicle sales, including electric vehicles, stood at 65,253 units, up 59% from 41,001 units a year earlier.

Tata's electric vehicle business also witnessed a significant jump. The company sold 16,549 EVs across domestic and international markets in August, compared with 8,540 units in August 2025.

That translates into an impressive 94% year-on-year increase in EV sales.

Hyundai Sets a New August Record

Hyundai Motor India also registered healthy growth.

The company sold 65,796 vehicles, including exports, in August 2026, marking an 8.8% increase over the same month last year.

Its domestic sales were particularly strong, reaching 54,396 units, an increase of 23.6% year-on-year.

According to Hyundai, this was its highest-ever domestic sales figure for the month of August.

The company also recorded 12.6% growth in domestic sales between April and August 2026 compared with the corresponding period last year.

Kia Posts Its Best August Wholesale Sales

Kia India also had plenty to celebrate in August.

The company dispatched 29,042 units, compared with 19,608 units in August 2025. This represents a substantial 48.1% increase.

Kia said the August figure was its best wholesale sales performance for the month of August since entering the Indian market.

The company's cumulative sales for 2026 have reached 220,991 units, compared with 183,882 units during the corresponding period last year. This represents a 20.1% year-on-year increase.

Competition Heats Up in India's Auto Market

The August figures show that India's automobile market remains highly competitive. While Maruti Suzuki continues to lead in overall volumes, manufacturers such as Tata Motors and Mahindra are recording rapid growth, particularly in SUVs and electric vehicles.

With the festive season approaching, automakers will be hoping that consumer demand remains strong and gives the Indian car market another boost in the coming months.
