Cricket fans in Delhi may have to change their plans for India's upcoming series against Sri Lanka in December. According to reports, the venue for the opening ODI has been shifted from Delhi to Ahmedabad due to major renovation work planned at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
India and Sri Lanka are scheduled to play a six-match white-ball series featuring three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is). The reported venue change means the opening ODI, originally scheduled for December 13 at Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, will instead take place at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on the same date.
However, the reported change should be treated as provisional until the BCCI officially confirms the revised schedule.
Why Is the India-Sri Lanka Match Being Shifted?
The proposed relocation is reportedly linked to extensive renovation work planned at the Arun Jaitley Stadium by the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA).
The planned upgrades are expected to include major improvements to the pitch and outfield, the installation of an advanced sub-air drainage system and wider infrastructure enhancements across the stadium complex.
Such work requires significant time and may prevent the venue from hosting matches during the renovation period. Moving the international fixture would allow the upgrades to proceed without disrupting the series schedule.
Domestic Cricket Also Expected to Be Affected
The renovation work could have implications beyond international cricket. According to the report, Delhi's Ranji Trophy team may need alternative venues for its upcoming home matches against Gujarat, Services and Maharashtra.
Women's cricket and junior-level tournaments could also be affected by the stadium's temporary unavailability.
The DDCA has reportedly identified the Palam and Jamia Millia cricket grounds as possible alternative venues for domestic fixtures during this period.
