Team India wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant's return to competitive cricket remains uncertain as he continues his recovery from injury. Even if he clears the upcoming fitness assessment, he may not feature in the third unofficial Test between India A and New Zealand A, scheduled to be played in Lincoln from November 7 to 10.
Pant sustained an injury during the Irani Cup in Srinagar last month. He subsequently reported to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for rehabilitation but reportedly failed his fitness test on Sunday. As a result, he has not yet received clearance to join the India A squad for the upcoming match.
Pant could join the senior Indian team directly
According to reports, the 28-year-old wicketkeeper could be considered for a direct return to the senior Indian team in Wellington rather than being asked to play for India A first.
Pant's impressive record in overseas Test cricket could work in his favour. He has scored Test centuries in England, Australia and South Africa, establishing himself as one of India's most effective batters in challenging conditions.
However, his participation in the upcoming tour will depend on the outcome of his next fitness assessment. A final decision is expected only after the second test.
Pant's impressive record in SENA countries
Rishabh Pant has delivered several memorable performances in SENA countries—South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia.
His Test record includes:
-
South Africa: One Test century.
-
Australia: One Test century.
-
England: Four Test centuries.
These performances highlight his ability to succeed in difficult overseas conditions and make him an important part of India's Test plans.
New Zealand remains an unfinished challenge
Despite his success in other overseas conditions, Pant is yet to score a Test century in New Zealand.
He has played only two Test matches in the country, accumulating 60 runs. The upcoming tour could therefore provide him with an opportunity to improve his record against the New Zealand bowling attack.
India's World Test Championship ambitions
The upcoming Test series against New Zealand will be important for India's World Test Championship campaign. Securing victories could significantly strengthen the team's chances of qualifying for the final.
Pant's availability would provide India with an additional batting option and valuable experience in overseas conditions. For now, the focus remains on his recovery and fitness clearance. Whether he joins India A or makes a direct return to the senior squad will become clearer after the next assessment.
