Himachal's Mamta Dies After Brutal Acid Attack; Two Children Left Orphaned as Husband Remains in Jail

Mamta, a 41-year-old woman from Mandi district in Himachal Pradesh, who was severely injured in a horrific acid attack on Sunday, has died during treatment at PGI Chandigarh. She had suffered nearly 50 percent burns and multiple injuries after her husband allegedly threw acid on her and pushed her off a rooftop. Doctors declared her dead at around 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday. Her body is being brought back to Mandi on Thursday for the last rites.

The accused husband, Nand Lal, who ran a tea stall near the Zonal Hospital in Mandi, has already been arrested and remains in jail. With Mamta’s death and the father in custody, the couple’s two young children have now been left orphaned.

The attack took place on the night of November 15. Mamta, a resident of Pipli, Chhatar village under the Chunauta Panchayat in Dharampur, had been involved in a prolonged marital dispute with Nand Lal, and the case was pending in court. After the assault, she was first taken to Mandi and then referred to AIIMS Bilaspur before finally being shifted to PGI Chandigarh, where she spent three days in critical condition on assisted oxygen.

Mamta had been active on Facebook, with thousands of followers. Hours before the attack, she had posted multiple videos expressing distress over her troubled marriage. In one video, she accused her husband of controlling behaviour and said he would question anyone who visited their home, filming them and asking intrusive questions like, “How do you know this person?” and “Why have you come here?”

She had shared videos of arguments with her husband and described how he isolated her from her family. Mamta also spoke about their 25-year marriage, saying that she endured it only for the sake of her children, especially her daughter.

In another post, she wrote cryptic messages suggesting betrayal and manipulation by people close to her, stating that some individuals “live together yet harbour jealousy” and “pretend hostility while maintaining relationships.”

Investigators revealed that during treatment, Mamta gave a statement expressing just one wish: that her funeral not be conducted at her in-laws’ home. Police have said that, following her death, a murder case will now be registered against Nand Lal and further action will be taken based on the investigation.
