Himachal Pradesh: Engineering Student Dies by Suicide in Hostel, Classmate Booked for Abetment

Mandi (Himachal Pradesh), June 3, 2025: A tragic incident has emerged from Jawaharlal Nehru Government Engineering College, Sundarnagar, in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, where a fourth-semester computer science student allegedly died by suicide inside his hostel room. Police have recovered a suicide note in which the student accused a fellow female classmate of blackmail and mental harassment.

The incident came to light when hostel mates noticed the student hadn’t left his room for an unusually long time. Despite repeated knocks, he did not respond. When the door was finally broken open, the student was found hanging from a ceiling fan using a belt. Authorities were immediately informed.

Classmate Held Responsible in Suicide Note

During the preliminary investigation, police recovered a suicide note from the room. In the note, the deceased student clearly mentioned that one of his classmates was responsible for his drastic step. Acting on the note and a formal complaint lodged by the student’s mother, police arrested a second-semester female student from the same college.

Allegation of Blackmail

According to the mother of the deceased, her son was being blackmailed and mentally harassed by the accused student, which pushed him into depression and ultimately led to suicide. Based on her statement, police have registered a case under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (abetment to suicide).

Legal Action Initiated

Police officials confirmed that the post-mortem has been completed and the student’s body has been handed over to the family. The arrested student was produced before the Additional Judicial Magistrate in Sundarnagar and has been remanded to two days of police custody for further interrogation.

The case has sent shockwaves through the student community and raised concerns over mental health support and safety in educational institutions.
