Sitting for such long periods of time while using a laptop or watching TV significantly reduces the level of movement in our daily lives and impacts overall health in the long run.
Sitting for long periods of time can cause heart problems. Moving your body promotes physical activity and good circulation.
Sitting for long periods of time can affect how the body uses blood sugar over time, increasing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Staying in the same position for most of the day can put unnecessary strain on your back and neck. Poor posture while sitting can also lead to muscle pain and stiffness.
Although too little exercise can make people feel inactive and lack energy, it's important for everyone to move around for a while to avoid sitting for long periods of time.
You don't need to make drastic changes to your life, but getting up from your desk and taking a short walk, taking several walks in between, taking the stairs instead of the elevator whenever possible, or walking and talking while on the phone is often enough to make you sit for less time.
