There is important news for school students and parents looking for financial support for education. The Ministry of Education has extended the deadline for applications under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS) 2026-27.

What is the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme?

How much money do students get?

Selected students receive a scholarship of ₹12,000 per year.

The amount is transferred directly to the student's bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system using the Public Financial Management System.

For a student who receives the scholarship from Class 9 through Class 12, the total support can amount to ₹48,000 over four years, provided the scholarship is renewed as per the applicable conditions.

Who can apply for the scholarship?

The scheme is primarily meant for students studying in:

• State Government schools

• Government-aided schools

• Local body schools

Students must also meet the prescribed academic and family-income conditions.

One important eligibility requirement is that the annual parental income should not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.

Students must also have secured at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class 7 to appear for the scholarship selection test. The minimum marks requirement is relaxed by 5 percentage points for SC and ST students.
