The gig worker strike  by delivery workers at major food delivery and e-commerce platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Zepto, Blinkit, Amazon, and Flipkart has dealt a significant blow to the nation. They have announced a nationwide strike on December 25th and 31st, 2025, to press for wages and other demands. The unions say working conditions in the gig economy are deteriorating.

The strike, called by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union and the Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers, is expected to involve delivery partners in metro and major Tier 2 cities. However, it is not certain whether gig workers in other metro cities, including Delhi and Mumbai, are also on strike.

What did the Gig Workers Union say in the statement?

In a statement, the unions said delivery workers – who form the backbone of last-mile logistics, especially during peak demand and festive seasons – are facing falling earnings and problems such as long and uncertain working hours, insecure delivery targets, arbitrary ID blocking, and a lack of basic welfare and social security protections.

What are the demands of gig workers?

The main demands of gig workers working with online platforms including Zomato and Flipkart include transparent and fair wages that reflect actual working hours and costs, withdrawal of ultra-fast delivery models like 10-minute delivery, which workers say compromises safety, ending account suspensions without due process, better accident insurance and safety equipment, guaranteed work, and mandatory rest breaks.
