Four months after the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, new reports have revealed that Germany provided covert support to Israel during the war, alongside the well-known backing from the United States.
German Troops in Israel
According to the Tehran Times, German troops were stationed in Israel during the conflict, reportedly paid to assist in military operations. The revelation comes from an Israeli soldier and highlights that Germany’s involvement was kept secret until now.
Germany’s Official Stance
In June 2025, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz openly supported Israel’s attacks, stating that Israel was performing “dirty work for the West” and asserting Israel’s right to strike Iran. These remarks drew criticism from both Iran and within Germany.
Historical Context
Germany has a history of involvement against Iran. In the 1980s, it supplied chemical weapons to Saddam Hussein, which were used against Iran. Tehran interprets Germany’s current support for Israel as reminiscent of a “Nazi mentality.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned Germany for backing Israel’s actions, alleging that Berlin also spread disinformation to undermine IAEA monitoring of Iran’s nuclear program.
