However, a proposal has been developed to grant the authority to issue e-challans to police officers posted at local police stations and other units of the Delhi Police.

The Delhi Police has prepared a proposal in this regard and submitted it to the Delhi government for approval. With government approval, local police will also be able to take direct action against drivers violating traffic rules.

Who is issuing e-challans now?

Under the current system, traffic police issue e-challans for violations such as jumping red signals, not wearing helmets, or not wearing seat belts. However, in many areas, traffic police are not present. Therefore, even if local police spot drivers who violate rules, they cannot issue e-challans. A new system has been proposed to address this shortcoming. This is expected to reduce violations because traffic police will not be visible on the road.

The new system will allow local police to take action against violations such as riding without a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, overspeeding, and jumping red signals. This move is expected to reduce the workload of traffic police and make traffic enforcement in Delhi more comprehensive and strict.
