Diabetes is a life-threatening disease for which there is no cure, it can only be controlled through a healthy diet, the doctor has told which foods keep the blood sugar high for a long time, what you should avoid eating.
Diabetic patients are often told that they should avoid consuming too much sugar or other sweet foods and drinks. It is believed that sweet things increase blood sugar levels rapidly. It is true that sweet is a cause of diabetes but this does not mean that sugar patients cannot eat sweets.
General physician and neurologist Priyanka Shehrawat believes that instead of eating too much sweets, the emphasis should be on the fact that diabetes patients should not consume foods that have a high glycemic index. What should not be eaten in diabetes ? If you are a diabetic patient or there is a sugar patient in your house, then you should know what glycemic index and glycemic load mean and what is the difference between them.
What is the glycemic index?
Glycemic index means how fast your blood sugar level increases after eating or drinking something. This tells how much and to what extent your blood sugar can increase after eating anything.
What is glycemic load?
Glycemic load means how long it will maintain sugar in your blood after eating anything. Doctors believe that in real life situations, glycemic load accurately tells the glucose level in your blood. Because it also tells how much amount of carbohydrate is there in your food.
What not to eat in diabetes
When do glycemic index and load become dangerous?
If the glycemic index is more than 70, then it is called high glycemic index which will cause immediate sugar spike and if the glycemic load is more than 20, then it will maintain the sugar in your blood for a longer period of time.
What are foods with a high glycemic load?
This means that people with diabetes should eat sweets but avoid those foods which maintain blood sugar for a long time. You have to eliminate the following things from your diet.
White rice
White bread
Foods made from refined flour
Pineapple
Mango
Sweets
Sweet drinks
Bakery items
Refined food
Ultra processed food
Packaged food
Avoid banana and watermelon completely
Watermelon and banana have a high glycemic load. Patients with uncontrolled diabetes should avoid it. Its consumption will cause a sugar spike within half an hour because it has a low amount of carbohydrates, so its glycemic load will be low. The doctor said that people whose diabetes is slightly under control can consume watermelon but that too only twice a week.
