Managing electricity bills can become difficult when paper copies are misplaced or old bills are needed for verification. A new digital facility has made this process easier for millions of consumers across India. Electricity distribution companies and power departments are now being integrated with DigiLocker, allowing eligible consumers to access their electricity bills digitally from one place.
According to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, 68 electricity distribution companies and power departments across 35 States and Union Territories had been onboarded onto DigiLocker by June 2026. This allows consumers of participating utilities to securely access their digital electricity bills through the DigiLocker platform.
No Need to Keep Searching for Old Paper Bills
Electricity bills are often required when applying for certain services, verifying an address or maintaining household records. Traditionally, people had to preserve paper bills or search through old emails and messages to find them.
With the DigiLocker integration, consumers can retrieve their available electricity bills digitally whenever required. This can be particularly useful for people who have lost a physical bill or need to access their latest bill while away from home.
How the New Facility Works
DigiLocker acts as a digital document wallet where documents issued by participating organisations can be accessed electronically. Consumers whose electricity provider is supported can use the DigiLocker app or website and look for their electricity-related documents.
The availability of a bill depends on whether the consumer's particular electricity distribution company or department has been integrated with DigiLocker. Therefore, consumers should check the platform rather than assuming that every electricity provider is currently supported.
Why This Could Be Useful for Households
The facility can make everyday record keeping easier. Instead of maintaining a separate folder containing months or years of electricity bills, consumers can access digitally issued documents through their DigiLocker account.
It can also be convenient for people who frequently make payments online and do not receive or retain physical copies of their bills.
A Useful Step for Digital Government Services
The integration is part of the broader expansion of DigiLocker beyond traditional identity and education documents. Government departments and utility providers are increasingly making official records available digitally, reducing dependence on physical paperwork.
For electricity consumers, this means an important household document can potentially be available alongside other digital records in the same platform.
Check Whether Your Electricity Provider Is Available
Consumers can open DigiLocker and search for their electricity provider or relevant department. If the provider has been onboarded and the required service is available, the consumer can follow the instructions shown on the platform to retrieve the document.
It is important to use only the official DigiLocker website or application and avoid unofficial websites asking for OTPs, banking details or other sensitive information.
