The Delhi government has announced the implementation of the Raahveer scheme to ensure timely assistance to those injured in road accidents. Under this scheme, anyone who helps transport a road accident victim to a hospital or receive treatment within the first hour, the golden hour, will receive a cash reward of ₹25,000. The golden hour is the time when immediate medical attention after an accident provides the highest chance of survival. The government believes that people often refrain from providing assistance due to fear of legal complications or expense. The aim of this scheme is to eliminate this fear, encouraging people to come forward without hesitation and help save the lives of the injured.
Who can claim the prize of Rs 25,000?
The Raah-Veer scheme is designed to allow anyone to participate. If a pedestrian, car driver, biker, or cyclist takes an accident victim to the hospital, they may be eligible for a reward. The person providing assistance need not be acquainted with the victim. The only requirement is that the accident occurred in Delhi and the victim was admitted to a registered hospital. The amount of ₹25,000 will be awarded after hospital verification and administrative investigation. The government has also clarified that the person providing assistance will not be involved in police or court proceedings; their information will only be collected for the purpose of awarding the reward.
What is different from the earlier rules?
Previously, Good Samaritan rules provided legal protection to those who helped, but no financial reward was provided. This prevented many people from helping despite the rules. Now, a fixed cash reward has been added to the Raahveer scheme, which will encourage people to help. This system provides both legal protection and financial support. This will give those who help both respect and recognition.
What will be the impact on road safety?
It’s worth noting that in a large city like Delhi, traffic and accidents are high. Passersby can often be the first to provide assistance immediately after an accident. If the injured person receives treatment within an hour, their chances of survival are significantly increased. The Raah-Veer scheme will alleviate fear and encourage people to come forward. This can improve road safety and reduce delays in emergency assistance.
