A tragic incident unfolded in Uttar Pradesh’s Muzaffarnagar district where a man allegedly murdered his girlfriend and then took his own life, just three days before the woman was scheduled to marry another man. The incident has left both families devastated and the village in shock.

The case has been reported from Bhalwa village under the Jansath police station area. The deceased have been identified as 27-year-old Pragati and 30-year-old Rohit, who were reportedly in a long-term relationship.

Love Affair Opposed by Family

According to police, Pragati and Rohit belonged to the same caste and village and had known each other for several years. They were also said to have worked together at a private company in Gurugram. However, Pragati’s family was opposed to the relationship, following which her marriage was arranged elsewhere. Her wedding was scheduled for April 8.

Police said Rohit was deeply distressed by the impending marriage.

Incident Inside the House

On Thursday, Rohit allegedly arrived unexpectedly at Pragati’s house. After an initial conversation, he reportedly attacked her with a sharp weapon, stabbing her multiple times and killing her on the spot. He then inflicted fatal injuries upon himself.

Police were informed soon after and rushed to the scene. Both bodies were recovered from inside the house and sent for post-mortem examination. A forensic team was called to collect evidence.

Police Investigation Underway

Muzaffarnagar SSP Sanjay Kumar Verma said the incident is being investigated as a case of murder followed by suicide, linked to a failed love affair.

“On receiving the information, senior officers along with the Jansath police and a forensic team reached the spot. All evidence has been collected. Preliminary findings indicate the matter is related to a love affair,” the SSP said.

He added that family members informed the police that the room was locked from the inside, and there is also unverified information suggesting that the couple may have been considering suicide together. “This aspect is still under investigation,” the SSP clarified.

Atmosphere of Mourning

The deaths have plunged both families into deep grief. Villagers described the incident as shocking and heartbreaking, especially given the proximity to Pragati’s wedding.
