The Congress has expressed strong outrage over the reported mob lynching of a Hindu man in Bangladesh, calling the incident deeply disturbing and urging the Indian government to raise concerns over the safety of religious minorities with Dhaka. Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said the growing incidents of violence against minorities in the neighbouring country cannot be ignored.

Bangladesh has been witnessing heightened tension ahead of elections, with incidents of arson and violence reported from several cities. The situation further deteriorated after the killing of political activist Osman Hadi. Amid this unrest, the killing of a Hindu man on alleged blasphemy charges has sparked concern in India.

According to reports, the latest incident took place in the city of Mymensingh, where a 25-year-old Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, a factory worker, was allegedly beaten to death by a mob. His body was reportedly set on fire following accusations of blasphemy.

Reacting to the incident, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra described the killing as “deeply disturbing.” In a post on X, she said, “The news of the brutal murder of Hindu youth Dipu Das by a mob in Bangladesh is extremely disturbing. In any civilized society, discrimination, violence, and murder based on religion, caste, or identity are crimes against humanity.”

She urged the Government of India to take note of the worsening situation and raise the issue with the Bangladesh government. “The Indian government should strongly raise concerns about the safety of Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist minorities living in Bangladesh,” she said.

Priyanka also underlined that attacks on religious minorities in Bangladesh have reportedly increased since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government last year, with several lives lost in violent incidents.

Ashok Gehlot Also Seeks Central Intervention

Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot also voiced concern over the developments. In a post on X, the former Rajasthan Chief Minister said reports of renewed violence and attacks on Hindu minorities in Bangladesh were “extremely worrying and condemnable.”

Targeting the central government, Gehlot said it was “astonishing” that the Union government had remained silent for so long on such a sensitive issue. He added that continued silence could embolden hostile forces and urged New Delhi to take immediate diplomatic steps to ensure the safety of minorities in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh Government Condemns the Incident

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s interim government condemned the lynching, stating that there was no place for such violence in the country. It assured that those responsible for the crime would not be spared and strict action would be taken against the perpetrators.

Following the political upheaval that led to the removal of then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in August last year, Bangladesh has seen a series of attacks targeting minority communities, particularly Hindus. The latest incident has once again brought international attention to the issue of minority safety in the country.
