Congress Objects to Acceptance of Mala Roy’s Nomination in Kolkata South

The Congress has objected to the acceptance of Mala Roy’s nomination for the Kolkata South Lok Sabha constituency, alleging that she had not resigned from her position as chairperson of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) at the time of filing her nomination papers.

The party described the post as a “position of profit” and urged the returning officer to reject Roy’s candidature. However, the returning officer, Rashmi, accepted the nomination after Roy informed the authorities that she had not drawn any salary or remuneration from the KMC since 2019.

Census 2027 to Commence from April 1 in Two Phases

The census process will commence on April 1, according to an order issued by the Office of the Registrar General under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The announcement comes amid ongoing preparations following the ministry’s notification dated January 7.

Census 2027 will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, known as the Houselisting Operation (HLO), will begin on April 1. States and Union Territories will be provided a 30-day window between April 1 and September 30 to complete the exercise.

During the HLO, data will be collected on housing conditions, household assets, amenities, and related indicators. The second phase, the Population Enumeration (PE), is scheduled to take place in February next year and will focus on collecting demographic, socio-economic, cultural, and other individual-level information.
