Cold Spices and Their Health Benefits: What Are They and Why Experts Recommend Them

Every Indian kitchen is unique, and much of this identity comes from the spices used. Spices not only enhance the flavor of food but also have a significant impact on health. While most people are familiar with “hot” spices that add warmth and heat to dishes, have you ever heard of “cold” spices? Though it may sound unusual, cold spices have been praised in Ayurveda for their cooling and healing properties.

What Are Cold Spices? Insights from Experts

In a special discussion with Ayurveda expert Dr. Kiran Gupta on TV9 Bharatvarsh, the concept of cold spices was explained. As the name suggests, cold spices help cool the body from within. They reduce internal heat and irritation and are especially beneficial during hot summer months.

But how can you tell if a spice is hot or cold? Dr. Gupta explained that this depends on the spice’s “Taseer” (nature or temperament). Spices that increase stomach heat are classified as hot spices, while those that cool the body are called cold spices.

Examples of Cold and Hot Spices

  • Cold Spices: White pepper, coriander, fennel seeds, and cumin seeds are examples of cold spices. These help soothe body heat and calm irritation.

  • Hot Spices: Cloves, cinnamon, and similar warming spices generate heat and are classified as hot spices.

Healthy Drinks Made from Cold Spices

Dr. Gupta also recommended several special drinks made from cold spices that promote health. For example:

  • Coriander water decoction and moringa leaf water can be consumed warm or cold.

  • Cumin water helps reduce heat and aids digestion.

  • These can be enjoyed like tea and act as immunity boosters.

  • Adding jaggery is optional but should be avoided by diabetic individuals.

Balancing Taste and Health

Cold spices like fennel and coriander are rich in antioxidants and help reduce inflammation. They also promote healthy digestion and maintain overall vitality. Using spices according to the season helps maintain a perfect balance between taste and health.

Incorporating cold spices into your diet, especially during hot weather, can keep your body cool, calm, and healthy.
