Plane crashes have claimed the lives of many prominent personalities over the years, leaving behind stories of sudden loss and unanswered questions. Recently, the deaths of political leaders in air accidents have once again drawn attention to such tragedies. Beyond politics, the film industry too has witnessed heartbreaking losses, with several actors and actresses losing their lives while traveling by air. For some, a routine journey turned into their final one, and in one case, an actress even lost her life on her birthday.
Here is a look at five film stars whose lives were cut short in plane crashes.
Soundarya
Soundarya was a well-known South Indian actress who also appeared in Bollywood, most notably in Sooryavansham opposite Amitabh Bachchan. She was also active in politics. On April 17, 2004, while campaigning during elections, Soundarya was traveling in a helicopter that crashed shortly after takeoff. She was just 31 years old and was pregnant at the time of her death, making the tragedy even more heartbreaking.
Taruni Sachdev
Child artist Taruni Sachdev gained recognition for her role in the film Paa, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. On May 14, 2012, while traveling in Nepal, the plane she was on crashed. Tragically, the day of the accident was also Taruni’s 14th birthday, turning what should have been a celebration into a devastating loss.
Zubeida Begum
Bollywood actress Zubeida Begum married Maharaja Hanwant Singh of the Marwar state in 1950. On January 26, 1952, the couple was traveling together in a private aircraft when it met with a fatal crash. Both Zubeida Begum and Maharaja Hanwant Singh lost their lives in the accident.
Indra Thakur
Indra Thakur appeared in the popular film Nadiya Ke Paar, where he played the role of Sachin Pilgaonkar’s elder brother. On June 23, 1985, at the age of 35, Indra Thakur was traveling with his family on an Air India flight that crashed, resulting in the loss of several lives, including his own.
Rani Chandra
Malayalam actress Rani Chandra died in a plane crash in 1976. She was traveling with her mother and three sisters on Indian Airlines Flight 171 when the aircraft crashed. Sadly, none of them survived the accident.
These tragic incidents serve as painful reminders of how unpredictable life can be, especially for public figures whose journeys often involve frequent air travel. The memories of these artists continue to live on through their work, even though their lives were cut short far too soon.
