CBSE Class 10 Exams 2028: Can students still pass even if they fail in Mathematics or Science? CBSE reveals new rule..

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has clarified new rules for the Class 10 board examinations to be held in 2028. Under these guidelines, students will have the option to choose an additional 'skill subject' alongside their five main subjects. Marks obtained in this skill subject can assist a student in passing the overall examination, should they fail in Mathematics, Science, or Social Science. However, this is subject to the rules and conditions stipulated by the Board. This change applies to students currently in Class 9 (for the 2026-27 academic session) who will appear for their Class 10 board examinations in 2028.

According to information provided by the CBSE, these changes will not apply to students currently in Class 10; they are intended for those currently studying in Class 9. In a communication sent to schools, the Board stated that certain subjects—namely 'Individuals in Society', 'CT and AI Modules', and 'Environmental Education'—will no longer be part of the curriculum for Class 9 (2026-27) and Class 10 (2027-28). The Board noted that these adjustments are in line with the planned implementation of the new curriculum.

Which subjects will be mandatory for Class 10?
Five subjects will be compulsory for the Class 10 board examinations: two languages, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science. In total, however, students will be required to study nine subjects. This includes a third language, Art Education, Physical and Health Education, and Vocational Education. The Board has clarified that Vocational Education is mandatory for every student. To fulfill this requirement, students may choose one from the 22 skill subjects offered by the Board. In other words, while studying a skill subject is compulsory, students retain the flexibility to choose which one to pursue.

Which skill subjects can students choose from?
The CBSE has provided a selection of 22 skill subjects. These subjects include Artificial Intelligence (AI), data studies, information technology, financial markets, healthcare, and design thinking. Students who opt for any of these subjects will be required to take a board examination in Class 10. Upon passing the examination, their marks and grades will be recorded on their board mark sheet. Additionally, they will be awarded a certificate under the National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF). This provides students with the opportunity to acquire skills in a specific field alongside their regular academic studies.

What is required for those who choose 'Skill Development'?
Students who select a 'Skill Development' subject will not be required to take a board examination for it. Instead, they will undergo an internal assessment conducted by the school. Upon securing at least 33 percent marks in the subject, the student will be awarded a certificate by the school. Conversely, for those who choose one of the 22 designated skill-based subjects, appearing for a board examination is mandatory. This allows students to make choices based on their personal interests and future academic pursuits. The board's objective is to encourage students to acquire practical, useful skills alongside their formal examinations.
