What the research found

Scientists at KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) in South Korea have developed a new technology for cancer treatment, named REVERT. In this technology, cells can be made normal before they become cancerous. This is called the 'critical moment'. The name of this technology is REVERT. Through this, the gene network of the body's cells is observed and it is found out which 'molecular switches' help in the formation of cancer cells. If these switches are turned on or off in time, then the process of cancer can be stopped. This includes two main genes, MYC and YY1. According to Professor Kwang-Hyun, he has accelerated the process of identifying this special time in patients.

How was the result

Scientists also tried this technique on small organs (organoids) made from the cells of patients. It was seen that when the gene mentioned by the REVERT technique was targeted, the cells started functioning normally again. According to Professor Kwang-Hyun Cho, his team has understood the main issue when a normal cell starts functioning incorrectly. At the same time, if it is made healthy again, the risk of cancer is greatly reduced.

What are the two genes?

Two genes also play an important role in this. MYC and YY1 are such genes, which can help in increasing cancer cells in the body, and these are called oncogenes. If they do not work properly, then the cells start breaking and cancer can form. YY1 is a transcription factor which is a part of DNA. When it does not work properly, cancer can occur in the pancreas, breast, and lung.
