Bus going from Bengaluru to Shivamogga catches fire, more than 17 burnt alive, many serious, major accident in Chitradurga, Karnataka

Bengaluru: A major accident has taken place in Karnataka. Several people are feared dead after a private bus caught fire in Karnataka's Chitradurga district early Thursday morning. Several passengers have been admitted to hospitals with severe burn injuries. The bus was on its way from Bengaluru to Shivamogga when the accident occurred on National Highway-48 (NH-48).
It is being reported that a private sleeper bus collided head-on with a lorry on NH-48 near Hiriyur in Chitradurga. The collision caused the bus to immediately catch fire and was completely gutted. Several passengers trapped inside the bus died.
The lorry was coming at high speed
It is alleged that the lorry crossed the central divider at high speed and collided with the bus. Rescuers tried their best to control the massive fire, but the charred remains made it a horrific tragedy. This incident is reminiscent of the Kurnool bus fire (October 2025), which claimed the lives of 25 people.
9 killed in bus accident in Tamil Nadu
In another incident, a government bus swerved towards vehicles coming from the opposite direction and collided with two vehicles on a national highway in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday, killing nine people, police said. The bus, which was travelling from Tiruchirapalli to Chennai, reportedly suffered a tire burst, causing the driver to lose control and veer off course.
The bus crossed the road divider and crossed into the opposite lane, where it collided with a sports utility vehicle and a car headed towards Tiruchirapalli. Police said seven of the deceased were travelling in the two private vehicles. The remaining victims have not yet been formally identified. Four others, including two children, were seriously injured and are being treated at government hospitals.
