Brad Haddin Appointed New South Wales Head Coach After Poor Season

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming cricket season and the Indian Premier League 2026, New South Wales has appointed former Australian wicketkeeper Brad Haddin as its new head coach.

The decision comes swiftly, within 24 hours of the team’s season ending, reflecting the urgency within the setup after a disappointing campaign. Haddin replaces Greg Shipperd, who was relieved of his duties earlier this year.

Poor Sheffield Shield Campaign Triggers Change

New South Wales endured a difficult run in the Sheffield Shield, finishing fifth on the table. Their final match ended in a draw, and a heavy nine-wicket defeat to Western Australia cricket team confirmed their exit from the competition.

Concerns have also been raised over the declining number of players progressing from New South Wales to the Australian national team, prompting the association to rethink its development structure.

Experienced Leader Takes Charge

Haddin brings a wealth of experience to the role, having represented Australia in:

  • 66 Test matches

  • 126 One Day Internationals

  • 34 T20 Internationals

He has also previously captained New South Wales and built a strong reputation in coaching circles. Currently serving as assistant coach of Punjab Kings, Haddin has also worked with the Australian national team and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Focus on Revival and Player Development

Speaking after his appointment, Haddin emphasized his commitment to rebuilding the team’s competitive edge. Despite receiving offers from various global leagues, he chose to stay with New South Wales to focus on long-term development.

He indicated plans to revamp the team’s playing style and improve player pathways, aiming to restore New South Wales’ reputation as a key feeder to the national side.

Haddin is set to officially assume his role in June and has confirmed that he will not take up coaching roles with Sydney Sixers or Sydney Thunder in the upcoming Big Bash League season, signaling a clear focus on his new responsibility.
