The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering revisions to its central contract system, with fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah and all-rounder Axar Patel likely to benefit from a salary increase.
Pay Discrepancy Under Review
The discussion comes after recent restructuring saw the removal of the A+ category, which previously offered ₹7 crore annually. As a result, players like Bumrah were placed in the Grade A category, reducing their annual retainership to ₹5 crore.
According to reports, BCCI officials are now exploring mechanisms to ensure that Bumrah’s earnings are not adversely impacted by the restructuring, given his stature and consistent performances across formats.
Axar Patel’s Case Gains Attention
Meanwhile, Axar Patel’s remuneration has also come under scrutiny. Currently placed in Grade C with an annual salary of ₹1 crore, Patel’s contributions—particularly in ICC tournaments—have sparked debate among experts and fans.
The all-rounder has played crucial roles in India’s recent successes, including global tournaments, prompting calls for his elevation to a higher pay bracket.
Current Contract Structure
Under the existing system:
-
Grade A (₹5 crore): Includes players like Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, and Ravindra Jadeja
-
Grade B (₹3 crore): Features Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, among others
-
Grade C (₹1 crore): Includes Axar Patel and several emerging players
Possible Changes Ahead
A BCCI source indicated that the board is actively reviewing compensation models not only for Bumrah but also for other players whose pay may not reflect their current value to the team.
If implemented, the changes could lead to a more performance-aligned contract system, ensuring that key contributors like Bumrah and Axar Patel are rewarded in line with their impact on Indian cricket.
