News of prostitution is common in metros, but now the same 'business' has taken root in a relatively small city like Katihar. Ignoring the security arrangements of Katihar Sadar Hospital, two women were running a prostitution racket in the premises for several nights. The security guards caught these women red-handed due to suspicious activities in the hospital premises and promptly handed them over to the city police.

During interrogation, both the women confessed that they belong to residential areas of Katihar city—particularly Salmari and Barsoi—and that they have been roaming around and providing “sex services” for the past few months. They also said that they get Rs 400 to Rs 500 per customer and earn around Rs 1500 to Rs 2000 per night.

According to police sources, the activities of these women were being observed in the hospital for a few days. The female security guards became suspicious when they were often seen in suspicious condition late at night. When they were interrogated strictly, the whole matter came to light.

This entire episode has not only raised questions on the law and order situation in Katihar, but has also exposed the social degradation in which all the bonds of humanity and dignity seem to be breaking. It is certainly shameful to turn a place like a hospital, where hope for life is given, into a hub of prostitution.

At present, the city police station has taken both the women into custody and further investigation is being carried out to find other people involved in this racket. The police is also investigating whether the security personnel of the hospital premises are involved in this. This incident has raised a question—are the walls of hospitals also not safe from the traders of lust?
