Driving License Rules: The central government is taking a major step to make the rules related to driving licenses (DL) and vehicles in the country completely digital, transparent, and simple. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is considering revolutionary amendments to the Motor Vehicle Rules. The main objective of these changes is to promote ease of living and eliminate the need to visit RTO offices.
Big relief for those aged 40 to 60
The biggest relief in the new proposed rules is for middle-aged people. Now, those between the ages of 40 and 60 will no longer need a medical fitness certificate from a doctor to obtain a new license or renew an existing one. This change will save millions of people time and money, as until now, a medical certificate was mandatory for every renewal after this age.
Penalty point system: Not just fines, now licenses are also at risk
The government will no longer limit itself to issuing fines but will instead focus on improving driver behavior. To this end, it plans to implement a "penalty point system." Whenever you break a traffic rule, a certain number of "penalty points" will be added to your digital license. If these points exceed a certain limit, your driving license will be suspended. Repeat offenders may also be temporarily barred from driving.
Double blow to the pocket: Insurance premiums may increase
The government is also considering linking these penalty points to your vehicle insurance. If you have a high number of penalty points on your license, you may have to pay a higher premium the next time you renew your insurance. Aadhaar-based verification may be made mandatory to prevent fraud in vehicle buying and selling.
Everything will be digital: No more hassle of going to the RTO
In the future, the driving test and license approval process will be faster. There will be no need to visit the office to update mobile number, home address, or other personal details. License holders will be able to update them digitally by visiting the portal themselves. By making the entire process online, corruption will be curbed and work will be completed on time.
