Significance of Yama Dwitiya
Bhai Dooj is also known as Yama Dwitiya, based on the story of Yamraj and his sister Yamuna. It is believed that Yamraj visited his sister to honor her love and respect. Yamuna applied tilak on his forehead, performed aarti, and fed him, showing her affection and devotion. In return, Yamraj promised that any brother who visits his sister on this day, receives tilak, and is served by her, will always enjoy safety, happiness, and prosperity.
Role of Sisters and Festival Tradition
On Bhai Dooj, sisters welcome their brothers, apply tilak on their foreheads, pray for their long life and well-being, and feed them with their own hands. Brothers, in return, express their love and protection and give gifts to their sisters. While both Raksha Bandhan and Bhai Dooj celebrate the sacred sibling bond, Raksha Bandhan emphasizes the brother’s duty to protect, whereas Bhai Dooj highlights the sister’s love, care, and service.
