Ayushman Card Update 2026: Check These 5 Things Before Going to Hospital for Cashless Treatment

Having an Ayushman card does not mean patients should reach any hospital expecting cashless treatment without checking the details first. Beneficiaries covered under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) should verify their eligibility, hospital empanelment and treatment package before admission.
AB PM-JAY provides eligible families with health coverage of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary hospitalisation. The scheme is designed to provide cashless treatment through empanelled public and private hospitals.
If you or a family member may need hospitalisation, here are five checks worth making in advance.
1. Check Whether Your Ayushman Card Is Active
The first step is to confirm your beneficiary status.
Having an old card or a saved photograph of an Ayushman card does not necessarily resolve every verification issue. Beneficiaries should check whether their details are correctly available in the system before planned hospitalisation.
Verify your name, age and other basic information. If there is an error, seek correction through an authorised channel.
2. Confirm Whether the Hospital Is Empanelled
Not every private hospital in India provides treatment under Ayushman Bharat.
Cashless services under PM-JAY are available through hospitals empanelled under the scheme, subject to the applicable package and eligibility conditions.
Before admission, check whether the hospital is currently empanelled rather than relying only on an old signboard, online post or verbal claim.
This can be particularly important when planning surgery or another expensive procedure.
3. Check Whether Your Treatment Is Covered
Even at an empanelled hospital, beneficiaries should confirm whether the required procedure falls under an applicable PM-JAY health-benefit package.
The scheme covers a wide range of secondary and tertiary hospitalisation services, but patients should not assume that every medical service or expense will automatically qualify.
Ask the hospital's Ayushman help desk to verify the applicable package before a planned admission.
4. Carry Necessary Identification
Beneficiaries should keep their Ayushman card and required identification available when visiting the hospital.
The hospital may need to authenticate the beneficiary and confirm eligibility before approving cashless treatment.
Keeping documents ready can reduce unnecessary delays, particularly for planned procedures.
For emergencies, medical care should not be delayed merely to search for paperwork; the hospital can guide the family on the applicable verification process.
5. Don't Pay Anyone to 'Activate' Your ₹5 Lakh Benefit
Fraudsters sometimes exploit government health schemes by promising to activate cards or release a supposed ₹5 lakh balance in exchange for money.
Remember that the ₹5 lakh figure under PM-JAY represents eligible health coverage, not cash deposited into a beneficiary's bank account.
Never share an OTP, UPI PIN, ATM PIN, CVV or banking password with anyone claiming they can activate Ayushman benefits.
Is ₹5 Lakh Deposited Into Your Account?
No. This is an important misunderstanding to avoid.
Eligible beneficiaries do not receive ₹5 lakh as a direct cash payment. The scheme provides health coverage of up to the applicable annual limit for eligible hospitalisation services.
When approved treatment is provided through an empanelled hospital, payment is handled under the scheme's cashless mechanism, subject to its rules.
What Should Ayushman Card Holders Do?
Before planned hospitalisation, check three things in particular: your beneficiary status, the hospital's current empanelment and whether the required treatment package is covered.
Patients should also use authorised Ayushman Bharat channels or the hospital's official PM-JAY help desk if they have questions.
Doing these checks before admission can help families better understand what is covered and reduce confusion when treatment is required.
Disclaimer: AB PM-JAY eligibility, empanelment and treatment coverage depend on applicable government and scheme rules. Patients should verify current details through authorised PM-JAY channels or the hospital before planned treatment.
