Senior citizens often face some of the highest healthcare expenses, particularly when hospitalisation or major medical procedures are required. The government has expanded the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to provide health assurance to all citizens aged 70 years and above, irrespective of their socio-economic status.
The expansion is expected to cover around 6 crore additional senior citizens across the country.
Who is eligible?
The expanded benefit is available to all citizens aged 70 years and above, regardless of their income or economic background.
This is an important change because eligibility is not restricted only to senior citizens belonging to economically weaker households.
Families with parents or grandparents aged 70 or above should therefore check their eligibility and complete the required enrolment process.
How much health cover is available?
Under AB PM-JAY, eligible beneficiaries receive health cover of up to ₹5 lakh per family per year for eligible secondary and tertiary hospitalisation.
The scheme is intended to reduce the financial burden associated with major medical treatment and hospitalisation.
What does the scheme cover?
AB PM-JAY provides coverage for eligible hospitalisation and medical procedures covered under the scheme.
Depending on the applicable package and hospital, beneficiaries can receive treatment for various serious illnesses and medical conditions without having to bear the entire cost themselves.
However, coverage is subject to the treatment packages and rules specified under the scheme. Not every medical expense or outpatient consultation is automatically covered.
Why is this important for families?
Healthcare expenses can become a major financial burden after retirement. A single hospitalisation involving surgery, intensive care or prolonged treatment can cost several lakh rupees.
Government health assurance can therefore provide an additional layer of financial protection for elderly family members.
It is particularly useful for families who may otherwise have to depend entirely on their savings or private health insurance.
What is the Ayushman card?
Eligible beneficiaries can obtain an Ayushman card that can be used to access covered services at participating hospitals.
Families should make sure that the beneficiary's details are correctly recorded and that they understand how to use the card when hospitalisation is required.
It is also advisable to check whether the hospital where treatment is planned is empanelled under the scheme.
What about digital health records?
The government's Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is also creating a digital health ecosystem.
As of September 1, 2026, more than 97.8 crore ABHAs had been created and more than 121 crore health records had been linked to ABHA accounts, according to the government.
The system is designed to make health information more digitally accessible and facilitate the exchange of health records across participating healthcare services.
What should families do now?
If you have a parent, grandparent or another family member who is 70 or older, don't wait until a medical emergency to check their eligibility.
Families can verify the latest eligibility and enrolment requirements through official government channels and check the availability of empanelled hospitals in their area.
It is also sensible to keep important identification and health documents readily available.
One important point to remember
The ₹5 lakh figure should not be interpreted as ₹5 lakh of unrestricted cash reimbursement. The scheme operates through specified health packages, hospitals and eligibility rules.
Before undergoing planned treatment, beneficiaries should confirm whether the particular procedure and hospital are covered under AB PM-JAY.
With more than 60 crore beneficiaries already covered by AB PM-JAY and the inclusion of approximately 6 crore additional senior citizens aged 70 and above, the expansion represents a significant change in India's government-backed health assurance system.
