Aus vs Eng 2nd Test: Ben Stokes run out in Brisbane, first England captain in 63 years to be dismissed this way

England captain Ben Stokes is leading his team in an Ashes tour of Australia for the first time, but things have not started well for him. England were crushed inside two days in the first Test, and Stokes himself failed to contribute with the bat. His struggles continued in the second Test — and this time, a moment of misjudgment made England’s situation even worse. On the opening day at the Gabba, Stokes was run out, making him the first England captain in 63 years to be dismissed this way in Australia.

The second Ashes Test began on November 4 at Brisbane’s Gabba in a day-night format. England’s top order collapsed early, losing two wickets within three overs as Mitchell Starc again proved lethal with the pink ball. However, Zak Crawley counterattacked with a brisk half-century, and Joe Root steadied the innings with a composed knock.

A historic run-out after 63 years
Batting on 19, Stokes committed a costly error that led to his run-out, leaving England five wickets down. The captain was visibly frustrated, shouting at himself as he walked off the field. His dismissal carried historical significance: this was the first time since 1962 that an England captain had been run out in an Ashes Test in Australia.

The last captain to suffer the same fate was Ted Dexter, who was run out during the 1962 Ashes. In fact, Stokes is only the fifth England captain in history to be run out on Australian soil in an Ashes Test. The others include Frederick Fane (1908) and Archie MacLaren, who was run out twice in the 1902 series.
