Rain has become a major talking point in the men's cricket competition at the 2026 Asian Games. With knockout-stage matches being affected by bad weather, an unusual question has emerged: could Team India win the gold medal without completing a single match?

The answer could be yes, depending on how the weather affects the remaining fixtures and how the tournament's rain rules are applied.

According to the rules cited for the Asian Games, if a knockout match is abandoned without a result, the team with the higher ICC ranking can advance to the next round.

India currently occupies the top position in the ICC men's T20I rankings. Therefore, if India's semifinal against Sri Lanka, scheduled for October 1, is completely washed out, India could advance to the final because of its superior ranking.

That would mean India could reach the final without playing the semifinal.

What happens if the final is also washed out?

The final reportedly has a different provision this time.

If the gold-medal match is abandoned because of rain, both finalists would be awarded gold medals rather than using the ranking system to determine a single winner.

This rule is particularly significant because the previous Asian Games cricket final was also affected by rain. India were awarded the gold medal after the final against Afghanistan could not be completed, with India's superior ranking determining the outcome.

Could India therefore win gold without playing?

There is a possible route.

If India's semifinal against Sri Lanka on October 1 is washed out, India could progress to the final through the ranking rule. If the final on October 3 is then also completely washed out, both finalists would reportedly receive gold medals.

In that scenario, India could technically finish with a gold medal without playing a completed match in the knockout stage.

However, this remains a hypothetical scenario. The semifinal and final still have to be played, and the weather will ultimately determine whether the contingency rules need to be used.

For now, India's No. 1 T20I ranking gives it a significant advantage if rain continues to disrupt the tournament.
