A controversial case raising serious questions about police conduct has surfaced from Amethi district, where a young man has accused local police personnel of assault and theft inside the police station. The victim claims he was forcibly taken to the police station, beaten, and had a gold ring—gifted by his in-laws—stolen by police officials. He has now approached human rights activists and the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, seeking justice.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred on December 9. The victim stated that he had gone to Jagdishpur market in the Jamo police station area along with Himanshu, a resident of Sarme village. Around 5 pm, a Scorpio vehicle allegedly arrived at the market, and the victim was picked up and taken against his will to Amethi police station.

The young man has made serious allegations against the Station House Officer (SHO) Ravi Singh and constables Saurabh Agrahari and Om Prakash. He alleged that once inside the police station, he was beaten and harassed. He further claimed that during this time, the police personnel took away a gold ring weighing around four grams, which he had received from his in-laws after marriage.

Calling the ring extremely valuable to him both emotionally and financially, the victim said he made multiple visits to the police station demanding its return. However, instead of helping him, he alleges that police officials threatened him and pressured him to “settle” the matter by offering them a silver ring in exchange.

Feeling helpless and denied justice at the local level, the victim submitted a formal complaint to the Human Rights Commission and also appealed directly to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, demanding an impartial inquiry and strict action against the accused police personnel.

Police Deny Allegations

Responding to the allegations, Circle Officer (CO) Manoj Mishra clarified that the young man was brought to the police station only for questioning in connection with a case. He dismissed the theft allegations as baseless and misleading.

“The claims regarding the gold ring are completely false,” the CO said, adding that the police acted as per procedure.

As of now, no official inquiry has been announced publicly. The matter has drawn attention due to the gravity of the allegations, and further developments are awaited to see whether an independent probe will be initiated into the claims of custodial violence and theft.
