Acidity, medically referred to as acid reflux, is a common digestive problem that affects people of all ages. It usually causes a burning sensation in the chest, throat, or stomach and can become serious if it occurs frequently. Acidity often develops when the body’s pH balance is disturbed, leading to indigestion, gas, and discomfort. According to senior dietitian Geetika Chopra, dietary mistakes are among the most common triggers of acidity.
Eating oily, spicy, or heavy foods, eating too fast, or not chewing food properly can aggravate acid reflux. While fruits are generally considered healthy and rich in fiber and nutrients, not all fruits are suitable for people suffering from acidity. Some fruits can actually increase acid production in the stomach and worsen symptoms instead of providing relief.
When we eat, the stomach produces acid to help digest food and activate digestive enzymes. However, certain foods—especially acidic ones—can stimulate excess acid production. For people who already have acidity, this excess acid can cause heartburn, chest discomfort, and irritation in the throat. That is why avoiding highly acidic fruits becomes important during acid reflux episodes.
Citrus fruits such as oranges, kinnows, and sweet limes should be avoided if you have acidity. These fruits contain high amounts of citric acid, which can irritate the stomach lining and intensify acid reflux. Whether consumed whole, as juice, or in smoothies, citrus fruits can worsen symptoms for those with sensitive digestion.
Grapes are another fruit that may trigger acidity. They contain oxalates, which can affect metabolism and disturb the body’s pH balance. Consuming grapes during episodes of heartburn or gas may increase discomfort and aggravate acidity, especially in people who are already prone to digestive issues.
Pineapple is also not recommended for those suffering from acidity. It contains citric acid and can increase acid secretion in the stomach, leading to persistent heartburn. Although pineapple is rich in vitamin C, it should be avoided during acidity unless advised otherwise by a health expert.
On the other hand, some fruits can help soothe the stomach and reduce acidity. Bananas, papaya, watermelon, and cantaloupe are considered gentle on the digestive system and can help neutralize stomach acid. Apples and figs may also be consumed in moderation. Jaipur-based clinical nutritionist Surabhi Pareek suggests drinking coconut water on an empty stomach in the morning, as it helps calm the stomach and supports better digestion.
