AC Cooling Suddenly Reduced? 8 Simple Things You Can Check Before Calling a Technician

An air conditioner that is running but not cooling the room properly can quickly become frustrating. Many people immediately assume that the AC needs a gas refill or that a major component has failed.
However, reduced cooling can sometimes be caused by simple issues that you can identify yourself.
1. Check the Air Filter
A dirty air filter can restrict airflow and reduce cooling performance.
If the filter is covered with dust, clean it according to the manufacturer's instructions and allow it to dry completely before reinstalling it.
Regular filter cleaning is particularly important when the AC is used frequently.
2. Check Whether the Outdoor Unit Has Enough Airflow
The outdoor unit needs adequate airflow to release the heat removed from your room.
Make sure there are no boxes, clothes, plants or other objects blocking the unit.
Leaves, dust and other debris around the outdoor unit can also affect airflow.
3. Look at the AC Mode
Sometimes the problem is simply an incorrect setting.
Check whether the AC is operating in Cool mode rather than Fan, Dry or another mode.
Also check the temperature setting and fan speed.
4. Don't Expect Instant Cooling
If the room has been exposed to strong sunlight for several hours, it may take time for the temperature to come down.
Keep doors and windows closed while the AC is operating and minimise sources of heat inside the room.
5. Check for Open Doors and Windows
Even a well-functioning AC will struggle if cooled air is constantly escaping.
Keep doors and windows closed and check for gaps around windows or doors that may allow significant outside air to enter.
6. Clean the Indoor Unit
Dust accumulation around the indoor unit can affect airflow.
If the filter is clean but airflow remains unusually weak, the internal coil or blower may require professional cleaning.
Avoid opening or dismantling internal AC components yourself.
7. Check for Ice Formation
If you notice ice developing on the indoor unit or copper pipes, switch off the cooling function and allow the unit to defrost.
Ice formation can have several causes, including restricted airflow or refrigerant-related issues.
If the problem repeatedly returns, arrange a professional inspection rather than simply continuing to operate the AC.
8. Don't Assume Low Refrigerant Is Always the Problem
"AC gas is low" is a common explanation for poor cooling, but refrigerant should not simply be topped up without identifying why the level is low.
A qualified technician should inspect the system for leaks and other possible causes before adding refrigerant.
When Should You Call a Technician?
Professional help is advisable if the AC:
-
Makes unusual noises
-
Repeatedly develops ice
-
Has water leaking from unusual places
-
Produces a burning smell
-
Trips the electrical circuit
-
Has very weak airflow despite a clean filter
-
Stops cooling properly even after basic checks
Electrical components, refrigerant systems and internal AC parts should not be repaired without appropriate expertise.
A Simple Maintenance Habit
Cleaning the filters regularly, keeping the outdoor unit unobstructed and getting periodic professional servicing can help maintain airflow and cooling performance.
Before assuming that your AC needs an expensive repair, spend a few minutes checking the simple causes first. Sometimes the solution is much easier than it appears.
