Abhishek Sharma Becomes World’s No. 1 T20 Batsman, Surpasses Friend Travis Head

Team India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma has claimed the top spot in the ICC T20 batting rankings, overtaking his close friend and Australian cricketer Travis Head. Head had been holding the No. 1 position for a considerable time, but his underwhelming performance in the recent T20 series against the West Indies led to a drop in his ratings. Taking advantage of this dip, Abhishek Sharma surged ahead with a stellar rating of 829 points, while Travis Head slipped to second with 814.

This shake-up in the rankings has also affected other Indian players. Tilak Verma now holds the third position, and Suryakumar Yadav stands at sixth. Meanwhile, Australia's Josh Inglis made a significant leap, entering the top 10 by outperforming six other batsmen. However, India’s promising opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has dropped out of the top 10, falling to the 11th spot.

Abhishek Sharma's journey in T20 Internationals has been nothing short of remarkable. Since making his debut against Zimbabwe on July 6 last year—where he failed to score—he has bounced back with powerful performances. In his second match, he smashed a century, including 8 sixes. Although he went through a lean phase with seven consecutive low scores, he regained form with a half-century against South Africa and followed it up with another blistering century against England in February this year. That knock at Wankhede saw him hammer 135 runs off just 54 balls, including 13 sixes.

So far, in just 16 T20I innings, Abhishek has scored 535 runs at an impressive average of 33.43 and an astonishing strike rate of 193.84—the highest among top run-scorers in T20Is. His tally includes two centuries, two fifties, 41 sixes, and 46 fours. It is this explosive and consistent batting form that has catapulted him to the No. 1 position in the world T20 rankings.
