Significant news has emerged regarding Aadhaar. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has deactivated the Aadhaar numbers of over 20 million deceased individuals. This significant step was taken based on information received from the Registrar General of India, various state and central government departments. Family members can now report the death of a loved one on the MyAadhaar portal. This will help promptly update the Aadhaar database.
UIDAI has taken this decision to keep the Aadhaar database up-to-date and prevent any misuse. Removing the Aadhaar numbers of deceased individuals will ensure that only those eligible for government schemes receive benefits. This initiative by UIDAI is a major step towards making the Aadhaar system more secure and reliable. It ensures that every Aadhaar number is linked to the correct person.

Why is this step necessary?
An Aadhaar number is never reassigned. However, after a person's death, it is crucial to deactivate their Aadhaar number. This is done to prevent identity fraud and to prevent anyone else from using that Aadhaar number to avail of government schemes.
What is the new feature?
UIDAI also launched a new feature earlier this year that allows family members to provide information about deceased Aadhaar card holders. This feature is currently available to families of deceased Aadhaar card holders in 25 states and union territories that use the Civil Registration System. They can use the MyAadhaar portal for this purpose. Integration with the portal is currently underway for the remaining states/union territories.
