8th Pay Commission: Important news for government employees! Will the dearness allowance formula change? Find out

Central government employees are awaiting the Eighth Pay Commission. There are demands for significant changes to the Eighth Pay Commission, including changes to the dearness allowance formula, as the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) and other employee organizations have stated. This calls for a reconsideration of the methodology for determining salaries and pensions.

No announcement has been made regarding changes to the government dearness allowance formula. However, the Eighth Pay Commission has given employees a deadline to submit their suggestions. This deadline is March 31, 2026.

Dearness allowance is an important factor for employees and pensioners. Dearness allowance increases occur twice a year, in January and July. According to employee organizations, the current dearness allowance formula is not cost-effective.

According to employee organizations, inflation has increased. However, the formula for calculating dearness allowance has remained the same. Additionally, there are demands for an increase in the family unit. According to the current formula, a family unit currently consists of three members. There are demands to increase this to five members.

Additionally, there are demands to include modern expenses in the dearness allowance. This includes internet, digital services, healthcare, and education. Furthermore, demands have been made for integrating dearness allowance into the basic salary, including the fitment factor, and the old pension scheme.

What happens if the formula is changed?

Changing the dearness allowance formula could increase employees' salaries and pensions. Increasing the family unit from three to five members could increase the basic salary from Rs. 18,000 to Rs. 30,000. Additionally, adding the dearness allowance percentage to the basic salary would increase both. Additionally, the fitment factor could be increased, potentially increasing salaries by 50 to 60 percent.
